Principal's Update 09 September 2023

Caralee CS acknowledges the Bibbulmun people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which the school stands today and pays its respects to the Whadjuk Noongar people and Elders past, present and emerging.

By Mr Jason Shapcott, Principal

As many of you are aware, I’ve been at another school for the majority of the term. It was a great professional experience to step away from Caralee and experience another school and community.

We have benefited from some ideas and staff from the other school visited Caralee to look at our Shaping Minds instructional program. My thanks to Mr Moir who was Acting Principal and Ms Longley as Acting Deputy.

Term 3
As we finish another term at Caralee, I want to take a moment to reflect on the various events and activities that have unfolded over the past 10 weeks. While it's been a busy term, it's also important to acknowledge the efforts and accomplishments of our students, staff, and parents.

P&C Maths Challenge
I want to express my thanks to families who supported the P&C Maths Challenge. Your contributions have helped raise much needed funds for our school through the P&C via a fun challenge that supported our maths program. Thanks, Ms Longley, for putting it all together.

Interschool Cross Country
The Interschool Cross Country event showcased the determination of our students. I commend all participants for their efforts and perseverance and look forward to having a run with everyone over at Winnacott for training in 2024.

Book Week Parade
The Book Week Parade was a delightful celebration of reading and costume. By all reports it was a big success, made all the more fun by our older children joining in. Older still, our teachers and staff always deliver by getting into the Book Week spirit dressed in various themes and costumes.

Massed Choir at the Concert Hall
Attending the Massed Choir performance at the Concert Hall was again a proud moment for me on Wednesday night. Our students performed admirably, and I extend my thanks to Mr Ryder, our dedicated music teacher, for his guidance. Our choir’s reputation, and that of Mr Ryder as a music teacher leader is spreading throughout the community!!

Athletics Carnival
Mr Moir's coordination of the Athletics Carnival was appreciated, and it provided a platform for students to showcase their teamwork and being good sports. It was fantastic to have so many parents enjoy the day and a full wrap is later on in the newsletter.

Term 4
As we prepare for Term 4, it's important to be aware of up and coming events, some of which include:

  • P&C Cyber Safety Workshop Wednesday 11 October- A crucial workshop for parents and guardians to ensure the safety of our students in the digital age.
  • Meerilinga Children’s Week Event Wednesday 24 October – Families and children of Kindy and PP children will be invited to a morning of fun hosted by Meerilinga on our oval.
  • Interschool Athletics Friday 27 October - We'll continue to participate in interschool athletics events, emphasizing the values of sportsmanship and determination.
  • Caralee's Got Talent Friday, 3 November - An opportunity for our students to showcase their talents and creativity.
  • Year 6 End of Year Activities – Year 6’s will head off to camp in Week 7 and we will celebrate the achievements of our graduating students in week 10.

Check out the term planner ONLINE which will be confirmed on the last day of term and children will bring home a paper copy for the fridge.

Have a great break everyone and I look forward to seeing everyone back for the first day of Term 4, Monday 9 October 2023.

Caralee Faction Athletics Carnival

Another wonderful faction carnival season at Caralee!

While we were forced to postpone the Jumps, Throws & Distance Events Day to Thursday, we were able to get through all events on the big schedule over the three days of competition which started with the 800m in the previous week.

Our students were brilliant competitors throughout the days of competition, displaying great levels of competitiveness and sportsmanship. It was fantastic to see such a massive turn out of parents and community members in attendance at the Athletics Carnival on Friday, which only added to the great atmosphere throughout the day.

I would personally like to acknowledge the staff for their effort and participation, both in the lead up to and during at the carnival. A big thank you must also go to all the parent helpers that assisted on the Thursday and Friday: Brooke Lassig, Carmen Williams, Les Fong, Bianca Bates, Cheralee Lewis, Daryl Hunt, Nicola Lamb, Maha White, Jo Elatam, Leonie Fabbris and Ellen Gulin.

A big congratulations to Gold faction for taking out BOTH the Team Games and Overall Shields this year!

Some of our students will be advised of their selection in to the CDSSA inter-school athletics team over the next couple of weeks. The CDSSA carnivals will be held in Week 3, Term 4 at Santich Park, Lake Coogee on the following dates:

  • CDSSA Jumps, Throws & Distance Events– Tuesday, 24th October (pm)
  • CDSSA Track, Relay & Team Events – Friday, 27th October

Caralee Choir & Band

By Mr Matt Ryder, Music Teacher

It is with great pride that I write my Term 3 wrap.

Caralee Choir
The Choir closed out Term 3 with a bang!

After weeks of dedicated practice and rehearsing, the Choir put on a spectacular performance at the Perth Concert Hall with their Massed Choir Festival performance.

Caralee shone with numerous individual accolades;

  • Anna Cousins and April Vernon had their artwork featured as the cover artwork on the programs and teacher music books;
  • Emma Leon had her artwork featured as part of the display in the song 'Nothing Could Stop It';
  • Delilah Austen sang an outstanding solo in the song ‘To Be Kind’.

The entire Massed Choir Festival concert was an outstanding spectacle and one our students, parents and staff will remember for many years to come. All members of the Choir were marvellous representatives of Caralee, putting on an excellent performance.

One highlight from the concert was the Choir’s rendition of the song, 'Flashdance', where all of the students put on neon headbands and stunned the audience with their syncronised choreography.

Well done to the exceptional Choir students for all their efforts!

Caralee Band
Congratulations to the band who have been working hard in the background, rehearsing fortnightly on a Wednesday morning. They all put on a fantastic performance for the Caralee community at our annual Open Night. Well done to all of those fantastic musicians involved.

I am so impressed with the hard work and dedication coming out of the music department at Caralee!

Stay tuned for an exciting announcement about instrumental music at our school next year.

Dates to Note

  • Friday, 3 October 2023 - Caralee's Got Talent
  • Wednesday, 29 November 2023 - Music Assembly
  • Wednesday, 6 December 2023 - Melville Senior High School Performance
  • Friday, 1 December 2023

Book Week 2023

By Ms Callie Hagdorn, Librarian

The Children's Book Council of Australia runs a competition annually to encourage young authors and illustrators' creativity.

This year, I am so proud to say that two of our Caralee students, Anna Brown and Matilda Hall, together wrote a short story called 'Scout's Journey' that was read and considered by the judges!

What an incredible initiative by these two creatives. The book, with its surprising twist, will be available for borrowing from our new Local Authors shelf in Term 4.

Matilda and I (Anna) made a book called 'Scouts Journey' for the Make Your Own Storybook Competition.

Matilda did the illustrations, and I wrote the story.  Our book is about a thirteen-year-old boy called Kyle, who loves playing video games.  When his Mum enrols him into Boy Scouts, he goes on an overnight survival trip where danger strikes.
