Principal's Update : Community Update

Caralee CS acknowledges the Beeliar people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which the school stands today, and pays its respects to the Whadjuk Noongar people and elders past, present and emerging.

Welcome to the mid-term e-newsletter for term 2.  The COVID-19 disruption from earlier in the term seems like a distant memory as we head into the latter half of this 11-week term. I have been particularly impressed with how our students have handled the odd wet weather period and sensibly moved off the oval and surrounding play areas into the undercover area when the rain comes.

National Sorry Day, Wednesday, 26 May 2021
This important day has been recognised at Caralee and FLDC with staff wearing purple and students making and bringing purple flowers which have been displayed around the school (visible from the entry points on Winnacott Street).

Social Media & Children
From time to time, social media apps become very popular with children and sometimes this causes friction between friends based on inappropriate use out of school. We appreciate it when parents reach out to the school to alert us to these trends noting we don’t discipline children for out of school issues but simply offer support for children to deal with conflict and provide information to parents to make informed decisions regarding which apps they let their children use. Discord is currently a popular app for gaming and given the dictionary definition of discord, perhaps it’s not surprising some children are having disagreements. Please see the eSafetyCommisioner’s advice about this app and more at https://www.esafety.gov.au/key-issues/esafety-guide/discord

The P&C are working on providing a very popular guest speaker to deliver sessions to children and parents later in the year regarding online safety. Keep an eye out in future newsletters and the P&C Facebook page.

Uniform
Winter sees a number of students wearing more layers to keep warm and dry as the seasons change. Typically, we see some items of clothing start to creep in that are not uniform as outlined by our School Dress Code. Students who wear jumpers or windcheaters that do not comply will be asked to change into a clean uniform item for the day. As previously mentioned on Connect, bike shorts or gym wear does not comply with the code (acceptable if worn under shorts/skorts/skirts). Students who don’t comply make themselves ineligible to attend excursions and make their class ineligible for the fortnightly uniform prize draw.

Ngulluk Koolunga Ngulluk Koort (Our Children, Our Heart) Project/Telethon Kids Institute (TKI)
Our 3-year-old Aboriginal kindy program was due to start in 2020 but unfortunately delayed due to COVID-19. This would have seen approximately 10 children have the opportunity to engage in the program who are in Kindy this year. Due to low numbers of Aboriginal three-year-old’s living in Willagee for 2021, TKI have kindly offered the opportunity for Aboriginal children from birth to four years of age to participate in the program every Tuesday and Thursday from 9.00-11.00am. The program is staffed by Aboriginal educators from Meerilinga and Aboriginal parents and families can ring the school on 9312 4800 if they are interested.   More information later in this newsletter edition.

P&C Fundraising Fete
Every two years, the Caralee P&C runs a fete in Term 4 to raise money for the school. Families may be aware, local member of Parliament, Mr Peter Tinley, has committed $90 000.00 towards a Wellbeing Hub for Caralee. To make the project a reality within the next two years, the school needs to co-contribute funds to the project. Every fundraising dollar raised by the P&C to help the school meet this commitment means we can direct our cash reserves towards teaching and learning resources. If you are interested in helping, please come to the next P&C meeting on Tuesday 8th June at 7pm as a show of support or contact the P&C at caralee.pandc@gmail.com

Spellathon
Another biennial fundraising event is the Spellathon. The P&C is currently developing a flyer outlining the prizes on offer for kids and classes who try their best to learn their words. Basically, it’s a great way for our students to learn their spelling lists while raising money for the school. Keep an eye out for a note home and message via Connect later in the term.

Scitech/Lighthouse Maths
I was delighted to be approached by Scitech for the school to participate in a landmark maths professional learning opportunity that supports our highly successful Stepping Stones whole school maths program.  For more, see our article at https://www.caraleecs.wa.edu.au/articles/371.

Have a great remainder of Term 2 as we head into our winter interschool events later in the term.

Cultural Experience with Greg Nannup

Recently, the Ngulluk Koolunga Ngulluk Koort (Our Children, Our Heart) Project/Telethon Kids Institute (TKI) program treated our Aboriginal PP to Year 3 children, parents and Elders to a cultural experience with Greg Nannup.

The children sat spellbound by Greg for over an hour listening to Dreaming
stories and making and using traditional artefacts.

Greg commented how polite and engaged the students were and they were a credit to their parents and our school in how they participated and looked after the Elders involved.

Cultural Day & Language Classes for Aboriginal Families

Scitech's Lighthouse Maths Program

Mr Bilsborough and Ms Longley have participated in the program which provides students opportunities to engage in STEM and cooperative learning strategies to develop deeper mathematical understanding. Many thanks to the teacher and students of D4 and B2 who had so much fun trialling the learning activities.

See below for an excerpt from the Melville Gazette.

Kindergarten (B6)

This term we have hit the ground running in Kindergarten!

The children demonstrated ease and resilience to adapting to school life with teachers and adults wearing masks at the start of the term. A sign of the current world these children are growing up in. It highlighted the importance of teaching children skills for life and arming them with a ‘go-to’ tool kit of strategies to use to help them stay calm and develop their wellness muscles!

The Kindergarten children have been engaging in activities that help them to articulate how they feel, who they can talk to and how they can communicate with their friends and family.

The children participate in short teacher-led activities but are also encouraged to investigate their surroundings with curiosity.

It has been gratifying to see the children choosing to play inquisitively with play resources that reinforce mindfulness, finding calm and peace.

Self-awareness is a skill that we can all develop, even in Kindergarten!

Ms Keira Esten
Kindergarten 1 Teacher

Pre-Primary (B7)

B7 had an unexpected visitor two weeks ago… there were hoof prints on the ground and sparkles on the floor of the classroom!

We decided that maybe a unicorn had visited the classroom.  Soon after, we were visited by Thelma the Unicorn, who told us her story. Most of us in B7 can now remember the story using the story map, and soon enough the students will be coming up with their own stories.

We have continued following the Letters and Sounds programme, focusing on the letters b, h, f, and l over the past week, as well as learning how to spell some tricky words (the, and, to, go, no, my).  A lot of students are using their phonics knowledge to sound out words, which is very exciting!

In Maths, we have been focusing on looking at the numbers that come before and after a number, and we are just starting to learn about how you can have more or less of an amount.

In our free time, students have been creating wonderful buildings out of blocks and lego, as well as playing in B7’s home corner and pretending to be teachers in the school corner.

Fremantle DFES Incursion B2 & C2

The Fremantle DFES came to Caralee on Friday, 21 May to discuss Fire Safety in the home.

Thank you to Tim O'Hara for organising the visit.  The children at Caralee loved having them here.

Some other classes from Caralee popped in to see the fire trucks and fire fighters.

Project Robin Hood

Did you know?
The best way to learn a skill is by action, and the most fun way is by working with others.

'Bottle Top Hill' is a volunteer-run community project submitted to the City of Melville that hopes to bring the message of sustainability into our homes and provide a place for people to learn how to become more 'waste wise'

The Bottle Top Hill initiative is home grown and our own eco-warriors, the Caralee Idea Hunterz, have been actively working with plastic bottle tops dropped off each Re-useday Tuesday by our Caralee families.

The Caralee Idea Hunterz have been well suited to the task of participating in "REFLECT and RETHINK" and the importance of "RESPECT" of Country;  a theme that will feature as the first chapter of Bottle Top Hill's Sustainability Story.

They are discovering the different types of plastics and polymers and how they can or cannot be reprocessed; key to avoiding being sent to landfill as hazardous waste.

To help support this local initiative (and our school!), please cast your vote by Sunday, 30 May 2021 via the link https://www.melvillecity.com.au/our-city/connect-with-us/melville-talks/engagements/project-robin-hood-v

'Bottle Top Hill' also recognises that doing something in your community increases your levels of wellbeing and positive mental health.  You can follow their progress at https://www.facebook.com/BottleTopHill/

Be sure to check out another Willagee initiative on our Community Noticeboard too!

Thank you for all your ongoing support.
