Principals Update 24 February 2021

Caralee CS acknowledges the Beeliar people as the Traditional Owners of the land on which the school stands today, and pays its respects to the Whadjuk Noongar people and elders past, present and emerging.

Welcome
Although most families have been welcomed back to Caralee via Connect for 2021, I’d like to take this opportunity through the newsletter to welcome back families and the wider community for the start of the school year.  We have many exciting events planned for 2021, noting that we will have to be flexible around COVID-19.

Parents & Citizens (P&C) Association
I’d like to thank the outgoing P&C Committee for their wonderful work under difficult circumstances in 2020.  Never has the P&C been so vibrant and financially sound which is a testimony to the skill and dedication of all involved.  Thankfully all of our P&C office bearers and executive have renominated and were elected, which is fantastic.  As already mentioned, we have an exciting year ahead and the P&C is a big part of that.

Wellbeing Hub
An exciting promise by Willagee local Member, Peter Tinley AM is $90.000.00, if the current Government is returned, towards a ‘Wellbeing Hub’ at Caralee which could look like a space or classroom dedicated to wellbeing and pastoral care services.  This would require top up to approximately $150.000.00 to become a reality, which the P&C, Pharmacy 777 Willagee and other philanthropic sources will be necessary to help achieve this goal within the expected timeline of two to three years from now.

Online Learning
Although the lockdown, whilst a disappointing start for most of us, it did give staff a chance to test some of our plans to work remotely.  Mrs Wain led the charge with the fun work from home, which was not required but a kind gesture by teachers which was appreciated by many.  Further to that, 10 days of work packages were reviewed and prepared by teachers and they remain ready if needed.  Special mention to Mr Ryder (Mrs Dow a close second) who won the ‘best dressed work from home’ award for our whole staff Zoom meeting.  I enjoyed doing his first playground duty for the year as a prize.

New Timetable
We all got back to school after a week's reprieve and it has been a great start with children settling in very quickly, despite masks being worn by adults during the first week.  Our new timetable is seeing benefits for the kids with a longer lunch and staff morale is certainly up with the ability to take a longer lunch offsite if they are not on duty.  Importantly, the timetable is allowing for a better focus in the morning with literacy and numeracy blocks when children’s attention is better.  Teachers are mostly through their testing schedule and into their programs which have been well informed by the testing results.  A friendly reminder too that unaccompanied children should not be on the school site before 8.30am.

COVID-19 Practices to Remain
Please remember adults on the school site are subject to the 2 square metre rule.  We have brought assembly into line with this, so there is no ambiguity for events in the undercover area in the future.  Similarly, parents are reminded that for the foreseeable future, assembly is by 'invite only'.  We will continue to manage events the best that we can within the State Government rules, and I thank everyone for complying with those requirements.

Have a great Term 1 everyone.  I look forward to seeing parents and guardians at the first Family Picnic Day Tuesday, 2 March.

Jason Shapcott
Principal
Caralee Community School

2021 School Year has finally begun

All the staff at our Administration Office would like to welcome families new and existing to our Caralee Community.

To help support you and your child throughout their school career, we offer many avenues to obtain information regarding happenings both in and around the school.

CONNECT
Information from your class teacher and the principal can be sought through Connect  (an online environment developed through the Department of Education).  Invites to join Connect have now been issued to parents and guardians by Caralee.  If you are experiencing any issues regarding accessing Connect, please contact Shannon in Admin without delay.  For more information, please visit our Caralee CS website under SCHOOL OFFICE / CONNECT DET - STEP BY STEP GUIDE FOR PARENTS or click on the link https://www.caraleecs.wa.edu.au/page/218/Connect-DET---Step-by-step-guide-for-parents

Our website has been recognised for being a friendly and informative site for both school families and the wider community alike.  RECENT NEWS articles on our home page give you ready access to current events, plus answers to frequently asked questions can be found 24/7 by exploring many of the drop down menus and articles.  Why not pay a visit to https://www.caraleecs.wa.edu.au/

SCHOOL APP
Bridging with Caralee CS has never been easier with our school app called Updat-ed.  Not only do parents and guardians have easy access to the website, they also receive personal alerts and access to events, eNews, COVID-19 updates, absentee notifications, administration forms, Art/Choir/Music/Sporting events, P&C-run programs (Uniform Shop, Canteen, Gee Dads etc), QuickCliq, OSHC and Term Planners (this last one is especially helpful to our Kindy families!) and much more - all from the palm of your hand.  To parents and guardians wishing to download the FREE app to their phone or tablet, visit our website page at SCHOOL OFFICE / CARALEE SCHOOL APP or click on the link https://www.caraleecs.wa.edu.au/page/220/Caralee-School-App.

If you still require assistance and support, please feel free to come in and see one of our friendly staff members at the Administration Office, telephone us on (08) 9312 4800, email Caralee.CS@education.wa.edu.au or send a message through the Updat-ed school app under CONTACT US.

All the best for 2021!

Student Health Care

Student Health Care is important at Caralee, and as such we would appreciate the help of parents and guardians in supporting their children's health care needs and minimising health risks at our school.

Should your child require administration or storage of medication and specialised equipment, please see our staff in the Administration Office to prepare a suitable Health Care Plan.

All medication should be clearly labelled with the expiry date and your child's name and classroom.  Instructions on storage and dosage will be requested.

Please remember to contact the school immediately should emergency contact details change for your child at any time.

Parents & Guardians will soon be receiving a Student Update Form for you to check and return.  Please look out for this form and return it as soon as possible to our Administration Office whether details are to change or remain the same.

For additional information regarding Student Health Care, please click on the Parent Information Brochure issued by the Department of Education.

Thank you for your assistance.

Sport

This term, the students will be taking part in the Interschool Summer Carnival in Week 7 which includes basketball, cricket and tag rugby.

Students have commenced their training during lunchtimes to help get them prepared.

Good luck to all who are taking part.

Kindergarten

After a delayed start, the Kindy children finally had their turn to be at school; and what a fabulous couple of weeks they have had…only a few tears here and there (mostly from loving parents waving their children off!).

All the kindy kids have been so busy joining in all the action.  We have danced and sung, painted and made interesting craft, counted, explored the Early Childhood playground, climbed the obstacle course, read stories and made new friends! All in a day’s work at Caralee Kindy.

The children are learning about school routines, being independent and having a go, even if they are unsure.  We will be practising these skills in the coming weeks when we focus on familiar nursery rhymes while implementing the Talk For Writing program. Watch this space!

Congratulations families! Your Kindy children have successfully embarked on their learning journey with your support and care. The Kindy staff are looking forward to getting to know the children and their families in our exciting and innovative Early Childhood area.

Ms Keira Esten
(Kindy 1 Teacher)

Containers for Change

The Caralee Community School P&C has registered for the scheme and you can help fundraise for our kids by using the ID below. Thank you for all your support!

Most aluminium, glass, plastic, steel and liquid paperboard drink containers between 150ml and 3L are eligible.

Making change is easy. It all starts with you. Collect your eligible containers (instead of tossing them in the waste), then drop them off at a refund point where you can either keep or donate your 10 cent refund.

Not only is it great for the environment, but it’s also a great way to make some pocket money or support local charities and community groups.

If you would like to become involved, or make suggestions regarding collection of eligible containers, please contact the P&C at Caralee.pandc@gmail.com
