Fun swimming lessons for children aged five to 17 years of age in both the October and January school holidays. Enrolments for VacSwim in October and January are now open!
NOTE: October VacSwim enrolments close this Sunday, 23 August.
Half way
It’s hard to believe we are already in Week 5 and halfway through the term. As usual, Week 5 Wednesday is our Family Picnic Day and it was again a fantastic event. It was great to see so many families enjoying one of the few fine days we’ve had, despite the ground being damp from all the rain. It was again a great turnout in terms of numbers. I greatly appreciated how everyone spread out and maintained the appropriate social distancing.
Parents Onsite
As per State Government COVID-19 guidelines, parents continue to be welcomed back onsite for pick up and drop off. Many parents would have seen reports in the media about higher levels of independence and resilience in children being reported when pick up and drop off was at the gates only. Even though parents are welcome again on site, I have seen the difference myself with our Early Years and Year One and Two classes being particularly settled and engaged in reading and learning tasks even before school starts. Parents will always be welcome to pop in for a quick look at some special work, or to book an appointment with a teacher, but it would be great if this way of starting the day could continue. To that extent, the junior gate will continue to be staffed from 8.30 am until the siren to meet and greet younger children as they arrive at school so you can make a quick exit.
Capital Works
Last newsletter I mentioned the Nature Play proposal funded by the Commonwealth Government as thanks for my time away with the military earlier in the year (see pictures below of an example of a proposed new Balance Course). Many parents would be aware (and tradie parents grateful) that the State Government is spending money is schools to stimulate the economy due to COVID-19. At this stage we have seen new lino put down in our Early Year’s classes and new carpet going into the music room and library. I appreciate staff and children working with this disruption for such an important reason, and so far the contractors have been quick and efficient in doing the work. I hope to announce further works in future newsletters.
Sports Carnival
COVID-19 seems to find its way into most topics and the sports carnival is no different. Parents will receive separate communication regarding limiting spectator numbers so we comply with the 2 square metre rule (see HERE for the latest State Govt advice). In a nutshell, we’d appreciate if only one spectator (non-school age children allowed with that one person) between 8.50am and 10.30am due to the tight spectator area for the running races. We’ve moved the track over to make more room but we would find it difficult to comply with the rule if every child had both parents and grandparents, aunties etc attend at that time. After 10.30am is fine for more spectators to come and watch tabloids as we are spread all over the oval. See the special note later in the week for more information. Importantly, if families limit numbers and socially distance as they did on for the family picnic day, then we will be doing our bit to keep everyone in WA safe.
Parking and Street Crossing
I’m aware that the COVID-19 period, where parents couldn’t come on site, put great pressure on the parking available around the school. Although this has eased, our wonderful P&C are working hard to secure a cross walk and attendant on Winnacott Street. While that work is underway, I do know Rangers will be around soon to enforce Council bylaws before and after school. This area is specifically the corner of Drury and Winnacott St near the staff carpark (BTW please don’t park or drop off in there!!). While it is not clearly signposted as an area to avoid verge parking, I have asked the City of Melville to make the area safer with signage and bollards. Parents can help by not parking there due to obvious danger of parking on a corner and driving over a pedestrian path when coming and going.
Term 3
The remaining events planned for Term 3 include the Melville SHS Music Festival which is designed to showcase the talent of our choir and provide children the opportunity to experience the new Melville SHS Performing Arts Theatre. As mentioned, the carnival is fast approaching and last but not least is swimming in the last two weeks of school. Don’t forget to get your money in by Wednesday, 9 September and check out the planner at https://www.caraleecs.wa.edu.au/page/184/Term-Planner.

PBS Update
Our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) program continues to evolve and influence the way we approach ‘managing student behaviour’ at Caralee.
Our agreed core values are:
Being Responsible, Respectful and always being our Best, and these were reached by consensus through a thorough and consultative process.
A set of expected behaviours has been defined and scheduled to be explicitly taught across the school year, and are reinforced through our popular TED values program. We have also incorporated a Departmentally directed ‘Good Standing’ policy. All students retain a status of ‘good standing’ until they receive three detentions in a five-week period.
Losing good standing will result in exclusion from school and class rewards and/or other school events such as inter-school competitions and visiting incursions. Each case will be considered individually and may be managed at the discretion of the principal.
Assessments
On our School Development Day, our staff revisited a writing assessment tool called Brightpath. Our core business of school improvement is driven by the ongoing collection and analysis of student performance data, which Brightpath delivers in a very useable way.
Current longitudinal data in writing shows that Caralee students are achieving high performance and high progress, which is a credit to our teaching staff. In order to maintain and further improve this, Brightpath provides teachers and students with two critical areas of feedback – what students did well in, and what they need to do to increase their score.
Feedback may include 5-10 points that incorporate spelling and grammar, punctuation writing conventions and authorial creativity. In Years 4 to 6, the writing process simulates the NAPLAN on line submissions which simulates NAPLAN conditions, and streamlines the marking process for teachers.
Caralee Community School had our cross country event on Friday, 14 August at Winnacott Reserve.
This year was a bit different to years gone by as we aimed to provide the students with a fun event since the students had missed out on a range of activities usually held throughout the year because of COVID-19.
The overall winners were Luke Paul (D2) and Jeanice Krakouer (D4), however place winners from first to fourth will accrue points towards the Champion Girl and Champion Boy medals.
Thanks to all staff and parents for creating a great atmosphere with parents cheering and encouraging all the students and our teachers working extremely hard marshalling, giving instructions and judging the races.

Caralee CS enjoys many activities with our school family. We have some dedicated dads that have formed their very own special group of CHAMPION DADS!
The Gee-Dads have had a terrific time this year with our Paper Plane Project and Race Around the School 2020 events. Big attendances and fun filled events provided Caralee Dads and their kids great times to share together in the COVID-free latter half of 2020. Here’s to many more!
Thanks to all the Gee-Dads and students who attended our events this year. You made these get-togethers such great successes.
Also, a huge thank you to our Gee-Dads organisers, Grant White and Peter Lochore. Without these guys we would never have got the events off the ground. Sadly, Pete has decided to step away from being one of the Gee-Dads organisers at the end of 2020. For the last two years Pete has been a huge contributor to the Gee-Dads. We will miss him but will see him at Gee-Dads events no doubt. Thanks guys!
Happily, the equally talented Stuart Harrison has stepped up to the mark and will take over Pete’s position as co-organiser. Welcome Stu!
And so…we are planning big for 2021!
Pack your bags and brace yourselves for some serious FUN!
The GEE DADS are heading south in 2021 for their NANGA BUSH CAMP 2021 - for more details, see FLYER.
In 2017, our Champion Dads of Caralee formed a group (renamed the "Gee Dads"), and commenced a program of activities with fellow male parents and father figures within our school.

Every week in the Skylab is Science Week!
This time of the year we pursue the study of Biology.
The Year Ones have been on a schoolyard safari and the Year Twos are discovering the wonderful world of plants.
The Year Threes are learning about life cycles and food chains while the Year Fours are looking at ways to improve the environment around us with special attention to the FOGO system of rubbish collection.
The Year Fives have been collecting plant items from around the school and drawing and labelling them into their books. The Year Sixes in D2 have been studying micro-organisms and will be doing experiments with mould.
Everybody has been fascinated with the ’Snail Zoo’. A big thanks to D1 for providing a huge bounty of snails. Awesome!
In Art this term we have been continuing to complete some of our projects. D1 have almost completed all of their peacock calendar boards and we will be glossing them soon. They look fantastic!
Some students have been busy working with Sam on our “Upcycling Art competition.” It is amazing. Sam and the students have done a wonderful job of turning what would normally be landfill or pollution, into a great art piece. Transforming waste into art is a great way to “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”
The “Upcycling Art Competition” is about using everyday items we throw away and turning them into fantastic art work. We collected items from around the school that were destined for landfill. These items included boxes and packaging from newly installed interactive whiteboards, an old stool that was broken, old soccer goals that had snapped, old, torn netted sports bags, CD’s that were no longer needed, broken cabling from computer parts, bubble wrap and some old egg cartons that had already been leased a second life in the art room and were now ready to be thrown out. We rescued all of these items and began to work on our art piece. Sam and some of our fabulous artists worked with our recycled objects to make an amazing dragon.
The Music room has been hearing the sweet sounds of ukuleles strumming classic songs Stand By Me and You Are My Sunshine in Years 4 to 6 over the past few weeks. Ukuleles have been put back on the shelf to make way for some exploration on the drum kit. I think things are going to get a little noisier…
Years 1 to 2 students are continuing to expand their knowledge of composition with basic rhythm and pitch.
Year 3 students have been playing a range of popular song riffs on the keyboard and the glockenspiel ‘Rock-en-spiel’. The latest riff students are working on is the Cream classic ‘Sunshine of Your Love’.
The school is gearing up for a music excursion to Melville Senior High School where we have kindly been invited to be part of a Music Festival that they are hosting. The festival will feature performances from various MSHS students and will hopefully give the next generation of musicians some inspiration. The Caralee Choir will also be performing.
News on The Massed Choir Festival Sing Day and Music: Count Us In is to follow.
In STEAMEC (Science Technology Engineering Arts & Maths Extension class), we have been continuing working on coding our Lego Mindstorm Ev3 robots.
We have also been working on a design and technology project for the B6 class. We have been building a busy board for the students to use in class. We can’t wait to complete our project and let the B6 kids have fun exploring it.
WANTED:
If you have any unwanted keys and padlocks, latches, old door handles that you no longer need, we would love to take them off your hands.
Please drop them into the front office or get your child to drop them to the Art room.
Thank you
with Mrs Wain
We think a farmer was missing some of his animals this term because we found a green sheep in our classroom and we also met Rosie, an adventurous hen.
Luckily, the sneaky fox that was chasing Rosie was no-where to be seen in any of our Kindergarten classrooms.
We have enjoyed following recipes to ice biscuits and have made our own maps to find the Caralee chickens.
Our drawing and writing skills have certainly been challenged and we are constantly being encouraged to “have a go” because Kindergarten is all about trying new things and developing our skills.
Believe you can!
The Kindergarten Team
In English, children have been writing narratives, persuasive texts and are currently learning to write informative texts. Students have been exploring language used to make a text sound more convincing including high modality words.
During guided reading sessions, students have been focusing on comprehension and decoding skills. In particular, they have been learning to compare and contrast texts and identify signal words. When practicing speaking, children have been developing their expression, tone and use of voice modulation techniques.
Within Health classes, students have been exploring a series of values that can be displayed to build a more positive environment including tolerance, persistence, compassion and honesty.
Children have been exploring the importance of using natural resources sustainably as well as researching different cultural traditions in a range of African countries.
During mathematics we have been building on our knowledge of formal algorithms, equivalent fractions, word problems and working with temperature.
During STEM classes, students have been researching and building famous landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower and the Statue of Liberty whilst during sport lessons, children have been learning to play volleyball and preparing for the school carnival.
D1 have had lots of fun in Design Technology designing and making cars.
Students worked in groups to choose suitable materials from our STEM Lab to create their cars. The students took turns to push their cars on our D1 race track. We recorded the distance of each car and the accuracy of staying on the track.
Our winners were James, Lucas J and Kevin with a distance of 6.5m and excellent accuracy.
Melville SHS is looking forward to welcoming the Caralee students to their new Performing Arts Centre next Friday to hear the Music in Focus Senior Bands and performers. The Year 12's are using the event to practise before their ATAR practical Music exams.
The Swing Band will get them toe-tapping and they are hoping to enthuse the students to take up an IMMS instrument in primary school and see where it can lead if they continue it through to high school.
