Principals Update: Up and running

Welcome everyone to the first newsletter of Term 2.

COVID-19
It seems early each term we are thrown a challenge in relation to COVID-19 but as we did previously, we’ve listened to the health advice and done what is required to keep Western Australians safe.  My thanks to our families who have worn masks, socially distanced and have observed the ‘one parent per family on site’ request.  We will always keep families up to date via Connect and for particularly important messages, we use the text message service.

ANZAC SERVICE
We were fortunate to conduct our ANZAC service before any COVID-19 restrictions came in on the evening of the day of our service. It was an honour to listen to Mr Acott’s cousin, Flight Lieutenant Kim Shearman’s poignant words regarding his Air Force service and the meaning of ANZAC to him and serving Defence members. I was privileged, this time last year as part of Operation Accordion, to support the type of operations Kim conducted from the air as part of Operation Okra in the middle east. He and his colleagues are some of most talented and gifted individuals our country has protecting us and it was an honour he could come and speak to us on such a special day. Kim made a particular point of mentioning the excellent behaviour and attention of our students, some of whom are very young, as well as the public speaking talents of Alison Jones, Samuel Robinson, Evie Vernon and Skye Davis.  Many thanks to Ms Sue Deeks for organising wreaths and helping our children who represent service organisations and Mr Ryder and the choir for their moving performances. Lest We Forget.

CONNECT
Most parents are now used to Connect with the majority of families signed up and able to receive messages. This has been particularly important during COVID-19 to get the latest information but it’s also how parents and carers receive school reports in Term 2 and 4.  I urge anyone who has not obtained a Connect login to contact Shannon in the office on 9312 4800 as she would gladly help you create a login and gain access to this vital school communication tool.

TERM PLANNER
Anyone who organises events knows that things change. While a printed term planner is handy on the fridge, you can’t beat staying ‘Updated’ by checking the latest live version of the term planner on our school website at https://www.caraleecs.wa.edu.au/page/184/Term-Planner. Some events have been affected by COVID-19 with the Young Leaders conference for Year 6 student leaders postponed until it can be rescheduled. The Eagles & Fever Cup events which include football, netball and soccer teams has been pushed from next week to week 7 to ensure parents can attend (assuming conditions allow for that in the future).

TRAFFIC CONTROL
As mentioned in my Connect notice at the beginning of term, works have started on preparing the area where the crossing guard will assist children and families cross Winnacott St. We are hoping the Council take the opportunity to also complete the promised improvements at the corner of Winnacott and Drury St to prevent parked cars crossing the path and blocking the vision of the corner. Many thanks again to School Board Chair, Amanda Buisman and Councillor, Karen Wheatland for ensuring this project went ahead.

'BUSES ONLY' BAY
Speaking of traffic, I was disappointed to hear a small number of families are driving into the bus area from Clause Street to drop off children. This area is subject to the School Education Act conditions that control activities on the school site. It is clearly signed ‘Buses Only’, so the FLDC bus attendants can safely move children on and off buses without the danger of other vehicles moving into the area. People who flout reasonable requests to not drop children off in this area are subject to provisions in the Act that include fines. Thankfully, the majority of parents do the right thing and I thank you for taking the time to walk a bit further if you miss out on a closer car parking spot.

CAMP AUSTRALIA
Our Outside School Hours Care (OSHC) provider Camp Australia are now well and truly up and running and have already experienced an increase in student numbers using the service. I was pleased to hear Camp Australia is making good use of the handball courts in the undercover area with Austin Pozzi being selected to represent the Caralee Camp Australia Service at the regional championships to be held on Sunday. Good luck Austin!!

NAPLAN
The NAPLAN testing period is weeks 4 and 5 (10-21 May) of Term 2. NAPLAN was cancelled last year due to COVID-19 and interestingly, it hasn’t really affected our ability to plan and cater for the learning needs of our students. This is because we have a schedule of school assessment that includes standardised Progressive Achievement Testing (PAT) and a range of other standardised and evidenced based tests from Kindy to Year 6. This means we can track progress and achievement for students year to year rather than just in Year 3 and 5 which NAPLAN only targets.

Parents may be interested in the NAPLAN testing schedule which will be:

  • Tuesday 11 May – Writing
  • Wednesday 12 May – Reading
  • Monday  17 May – Language Conventions
  • Tuesday 18 – May – Numeracy

Thanks again everyone for working with the conditions required for due to COVID-19 and we look forward to a great Term 2.

Music with Mr Ryder

YEAR 1
After a jam packed first term, Year 1 students have had their first taste of what the Caralee music program has to offer. They have thoroughly enjoyed moving with rhythm and being introduced to a range of singing games.

YEAR 2
Year 2 students have been examining the different instruments of the orchestra and the different instrument families to which they belong.

YEAR 3
Students in Year 3 are about to delve into the beautiful world of riffs after some time revising reading the notes on the staff.

YEARS 4 to 6
Upper school Caralee students have been exploring the different elements of music through composition. They have experimented with simple and formalised notation and are currently writing four bar melodies to perform on the keyboard or rockenspiel (glockenspiel). Some of the tunes sound brilliant.

CHOIR
Choir is well and truly underway, committed students have signed their choir contracts and are ready for the performances to come.

Choir sessions start with a warm up song, usually a popular tune chosen by a student. They then proceed with vocal warm ups. We are very lucky to be joined by volunteer, Jo-Ann Sheridan who has previously worked as a music teacher and brings a wealth of knowledge with her.

Special congratulations to Piper Bartlett and Olivia Andrews who were elected to be Choir Captains by the choir. I was thrilled to give the girls their badges late last term.

On Friday, 23 April, the choir also performed at the school's ANZAC Service.

We are very busy learning a full repertoire of songs for the upcoming Massed Choir Festival at the end of Term 3. Choir members can practise their songs at home via the Massed Choir Festival app (see article Caralee Choir - Massed Choir Festival for more information).

Caralee Choir - Massed Choir Festival

Choir members are currently working hard at learning their repertoire for the Massed Choir Festival in Term 3, which will see students on stage at the Perth Concert Hall.

To support learning the songs, I ask that choir members listen to the repertoire at home via the WA Massed Choir Festival website:  https://massedchoirfestival.org.au/student-page/  (Password: odds21)

Or get the MCF app by clicking on the icon below:

Listening to the songs at home will allow students to come to rehearsals having previewed the different arrangements and ready to workshop difficult parts.

CHOIR SHIRTS
Choir shirts are available at the office for $28.00. These shirts are worn whenever the choir has a performance.  Alternatively, there are a number of choir shirts that can be borrowed from the music room for performances.

IMPORTANT DATES
Term 3, Week 6:
Wednesday 25 August - MCF Cluster Rehearsal, Churchlands SHS

Term 3, Week 9:
Thursday 16 September – MCF Full Day Rehearsal, Perth Concert Hall

Term 3, Week 9:

Pre-Primary (B7)

B7 worked very hard throughout Term 1.

We learnt the story of The Little Red Hen in our Talk for Writing sessions, followed the Letters and Sounds program for Phonics and the Stepping Stones program for Mathematics.  We also learnt about families in HASS.

At the end of Term 1 we celebrated all our effort and good behaviour by having a Hospital Incursion and a Teddy Bear's Picnic!

Pre-Primary Teacher

Pre-Primary (B8)

We have had a great start to Pre-Primary in B8 and have been very busy learning and making friends. It’s unbelievable it is Term 2 already!

In our daily Phonics sessions, we continue to learn single letters and their most common sounds. We are all starting to sound out and spell words, having a go at writing short sentences.

Everyone is really engaged in our Talk 4 Writing sessions, learning to recount stories and become authors ourselves. The story of the “The Little Red Hen” was a great start to the Talk 4 Writing unit. We even baked bread, just like the characters did in the story. We presented our story to the Kindy students, who were very impressed with our performance. We changed the story to make it our own. We called it the “The Big Grey Elephant”.

In History, we are investigating our personal histories and timelines. As we are reflecting on the similarities and differences of family structures, we also investigated how people are connected and where they were born and raised. We enjoyed sharing our personal ‘Family Trees’ with everyone in class and playing “Family” in our doll house.

In Numeracy, we use lots of hands-on resources to practise mathematical concepts. Sorting games, playdoh activities, patterning using different colours and shapes are just a few of the things we utilise that help us to learn.

We really enjoyed the Hospital Incursion at the end of Term 1. We received much useful information about the hospital environment. The best part was to dress up as a nurse, doctor or ambulance driver and also caring for our patient Gemma, the life – size doll.

Below are a few examples of our activities.
